The official languages are English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil. Malay is the national language, while English is the language for government operations, law and major financial transactions. Rainfall is most abundant during the North-East monsoon season from November to January. Much of the rain falls in sudden showers. February is usually the sunniest month. The hottest months are June and August, when average temperatures are at their peak.

The history of Singapore dates back to pre-14th century, at a time when it was part of the Sri Vijayan Empire and was known as Temasek. During the 14th century the island earned a new name Singa Pura or Lion City.
