“Goodness shouts. Evil whispers”
Bali is the "Island of the Gods” for good reason. Every village has at least three temples or ‘pura;’ which in Sanskrit means 'space surrounded by a wall,’ and there is at least one tiny version in each Balinese home. The Pura Desa is where religious festivals are celebrated, the Pura Dalem (temple of death) is for the beginning of funeral cremation rites and the Pura Puseh is dedicated to the Gods of Heaven.
Temples are not only ubiquitous; everywhere from the mountains and the valleys to the rice fields and the sea, but remarkably, each one is unique.
Early mornings see groups of girls and women bring offerings to one of the temples and when it comes to the important festivals, large processions of worshippers accompanied by colourful troupes of musicians line the streets.
The prevailing religion is Hindu.
